1. Miley was born on a farm in Nashville, Tennessee, the daughter of Billy Ray and second wife Tish. She has a younger brother, younger sister, two older half-brothers and an older half-sister.
2. Miley's godmother is the one and only Dolly Parton.
3. Miley was originally named Destiny Hope because her parents believed that her destiny was to bring hope to the world. However, her happy demeanour soon earned her the nickname "Smiley", which eventually morphed into Miley. She officially changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus earlier this year.
4. Miley's brother gave her the not-so-flattering nickname "Bullethead" because she slicks her hair back into such tight buns that her eyes are pulled right back into her head.
5. Miley has always been so competitive when it comes to talent shows that she broke up with her primary school sweetheart when he wouldn't let her win a contest they were both starring in.
6. Miley first auditioned for Hannah Montana at the age of 12, going for the part of one of the lead character's best pals. She later tried out for the main role, but was turned down for both parts because she was too young. She also auditioned for the title role in Zoey 101, but lost out to Jamie Lynn Spears.
7. Miley briefly went off the rails after her two-year romance with Jonas Brothers star Nick Jonas ended in 2007. She says: "At first I bawled for a month straight. I was so sad. I just went into this weird funk. And I dyed my hair black."
8. Miley describes Coldplay's Chris Martin as "so hot" and admits that a "16-year-old version" of him would be her ideal man. And the admiration isn't all one-way - Martin recently surprised the music world by announcing: "I like Miley Cyrus. I like the TV show."
9. What would Miley be doing if she wasn't a global teen sensation? According to the starlet herself, she would be a photographer or a professional boxer.
10. Miley had braces fitted after hitting the big time, but her dentist was able to hide them by fitting them on the other side of her teeth.
