Brad Pitt has visited homes in New Orleans built by his 'Make It Right' foundation.
The actor went to areas struck by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 to inspect newly built eco-friendly houses funded by his charity.
He said he was "amazed" at the redevelopment, which will make the Lower 9th ward one of the greenest neighbourhoods in the US. However, he acknowledged that more still has to be done to re-house all those left homeless in the wake of the disaster.
"The excitement is that it's being proven, but the frustration is that it's a long way to go," he told the BBC.
Residents used the opportunity to thank Pitt for his charity work.
"He didn't have to do this. I'm just grateful that he is," one 71-year-old resident said.
