Celebrities oppose renewing Trident

Pete Doherty and Damon Albarn are among a list of celebrities who have opposed government plans to upgrade Britain’s Trident nuclear missiles.

The singer and his Babyshambles colleagues have signed up to CND's campaign which states that the weapons are dangerous and not needed to defend the country.

Two leading-lights in the 'anti' campaign have been singer Annie Lennox, formerly of the Eurythmics, and fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. The pair were in London today lobbying MPs before a debate and crunch vote on the issue.

Others supporting the side include ex-Blur star Albarn, electronic master Brian Eno, the Kaiser Chiefs and former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown. "Why do we need these weapons?" commented Brown. "Say no to Trident."
