Orlando Bloom makes West End debut

Actor Orlando Bloom has made his West End debut after deciding he was tired of being typecast as a pirate.

Orlando - who recently starred in the third Pirates of the Caribbean film At World's End - is part of an ensemble cast in a revival of the David Storey play In Celebration.

The 30-year-old star had to master a Yorkshire accent to play Steven, a failed writer haunted by guilt after leaving behind his Northern roots.

The play opened at the Duke of York's Theatre in London to mixed reviews.

The Daily Mail said the actor "showed fine sensitivity with his part" but the Daily Express called his performance "disappointing".

Bloom recently said he was thrilled to be offered the role after realising that he had been making "pirate movies" for the last five years. He told the Guardian: "I decided I really needed to do some theatre because I was feeling a bit thin."
