The body of Jacob Adams - who looked after the dogs - was found on the lawn of the Mission Impossible star's property earlier this month.
He had been bitten on his arms and legs but the wounds were not likely to have been fatal, the Los Angeles county coroner reported.
Captain Ed Winter of the LA county coroner's office said: "When animals attack humans or other animals, the victims usually end up with bites around the head and neck. He had none. This leads us to believe he went down for some other medical reason."
However, he added: "We're not saying the bites were definitely not the cause of death."
The exact cause of the fatality is not yet known and a toxicology report is expected in approximately six weeks.
An English bulldog and three bull mastiffs, including two weighing 200 pounds, have been seized by animal services.
Rhames was out of the county at the time of the incident and has extended his condolences to the victim's family.
