DJ Andy Kershaw has been sentenced to a suspended jail term for breaching a restraining order that banned him from approaching his former partner.

The BBC Radio Three presenter was arrested in August when he broke the order stopping him from seeing Juliette Banner.

He admitted to the offence last month, and also to driving under the influence of alcohol in a separate incident.

Banner, who has two children with Kershaw, was granted the restraining order on August 1, but he tried to call at her house in Peel on August 29, causing alarm and distress.

Nigel Cordwell, mitigating for Kershaw, said his client was "a man struggling to come to terms with personal tragedy".

High Bailiff Michael Moyle, sitting at The Isle of Man Courts of Justice on Tuesday, sentenced him to three months in jail, suspended for 18 months.

He told Kershaw he was not prepared to "make him a martyr". The host was also banned from driving for 16 months.
