The socialite was sentenced to four days in jail, given a $2,048 fine and ordered to complete the 18-month programme after pleading guilty to a DUI charge when her car was found blocking a freeway car pool lane in LA in 2006. She served only 82 minutes in prison earlier this year.
The SB 38 Alcohol Programme is said to be aimed at people who have been convicted of DUI more than once in seven years. It comprises 52 hours of group counselling, bi-weekly interviews and 12 hours of alcohol education.
Richie's spokeswoman told Life & Style magazine: "Anyone who is pregnant or has medical issues can leave the class.
"It wasn't Nicole asking - she just showed up one day and the paparazzi were chasing her and she was exhausted. So the director of the programme was concerned for her and suggested she take a leave of absence. She didn't get special treatment."
Richie is expecting her first baby with boyfriend Joel Madden in January.
