Barry George has pleaded not guilty to the murder of BBC TV presenter Jill Dando.

George, of Fulham, West London, denied killing the 37-year-old at this morning's hearing at the Old Bailey.

Dando was fatally shot outside her home in Fulham in April 1999.

George, 47, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder in 2001, but he has always insisted that he was not guilty.

The Court of Appeal quashed his conviction and ordered a new trial last month after it ruled that the verdict was unsafe because of doubts over gunshot discharge residue evidence.

George was remanded in custody after an application for bail was refused. A retrial will take place on June 2 next year.
