Sir Paul McCartney underwent heart surgery in secret last autumn.

The former Beatle had a coronary angioplasty at a private hospital after complaining about feeling unwell.

A source told The Sun: "Paul had been complaining about not feeling well and saw a Harley Street specialist at The London Clinic.

"Tests were carried out and the decision was taken to operate. Paul had the angioplasty in a private hospital. It was all very routine but any work on your heart is a big deal."

The operation inflates the arteries, allowing blood to flow more freely. David Beckham's dad had the same operation after collapsing with a heart attack last year.

A spokesperson for McCartney commented: "It was a routine medical operation."
