Marc Lewis Gittleman, 34, was given a $3,000 (£1,532) fine and sentenced to two years probation after pleading guilty to interstate transportation of stolen property at a trial in LA in September.
He had copied approximately 7,000 snaps of Cruise's 2006 wedding to Katie Holmes after a paparazzo gave him a damaged computer hard drive to repair.
He then took them the shots to agent David Hans Schmidt, known for making deals involving personal photos and videos of celebrities, who contacted Cruise's representatives and threatened to make them public.
Schmidt pleaded guilty to one count of sending communications with the purpose to extort last August, but killed himself the following month.
Gittleman told the court that he had brought "unimaginable shame" on himself and his family, and would be working the rest of his life "to make it right".
