The EastEnders actor said the creatures seemed less frightening after he was told to imagine them looking ridiculous.
He told Inside Soap: "I was absolutely petrified of spiders, and I just decided it was something I really had to get over one way or another, so I went to see Paul McKenna.
"He put me in a trance a couple of times privately and had me visualise spiders with funny noses and big boots. Amazingly, it worked really well."
The 48-year-old added that he was "thoroughly enjoying" playing Vinnie Monks in the BBC soap, saying: "It has been a wonderful. There were times a few years ago when I ended up working in c**p clubs where people were drunk and weren't even listening.
"EastEnders has given me a new lease of life. Now my career is really on a high again and I am thoroughly enjoying every second of it."
