Blue Valentine, which also stars Ryan Gosling, was expected to start filming on February 25, but has now been put on hold indefinitely.
The actress had just arrived in Sweden to finish shooting Mammoth last Tuesday when she learned that Ledger had been found dead at his New York apartment.
She immediately returned to the city with the couple's two-year-old daughter Matilda.
A movie insider told People: "We will hold off until she is ready. The production is in the process of sorting it out in respect to her. We're hoping she will still come back and do the film and are happy to wait.
"The film is tailor-made for [her and Ryan] so of course we would want to wait. You can't get much better than them."
