Sopranos star James Gandolfini was hospitalised with a stomach illness earlier this week.

The actor was admitted into New York's St Luke's Roosevelt hospital for keyhole surgery on Tuesday.

He is recovering at his home following the operation on his abdomen. A representative for the 46-year-old said: "It was a minor procedure and he is already home."

The last episode of The Sopranos was screened in 2007 after six seasons of the gangster drama. Rumours of a big screen adaptation of the show were reported earlier this month.

Gandolfini will appear in a new Marvin Gaye biopic as the legendary soul singer's promoter Freddy Cousaert. The movie begins shooting in April.
