Aberdeen-born Jason Rae, saxophonist for the eight-piece funk band The Haggis Horns, was found dead in a flat in the Hyde Park area of Leeds last weekend.
A pathologist had formed the "preliminary conclusion" that the fatality was caused by a drug overdose, Leeds Coroner's Court was told.
Deputy Assistant Coroner Roger Chapman added that there was "no evidence of any injuries or disease".
However, an initial post-mortem was inconclusive and West Yorkshire Police are now waiting for results from a toxicology test.
The inquest was adjourned and Rae's body was released to his family for burial.
Bailey Rae was not present at the hearing. She met her husband while working as a cloakroom attendant at a Leeds jazz club and they married in 2001.
