Politicians and industry figures have spoken of their sorrow at the loss of the actor, who made his name playing heroic roles such as Moses in 1956 film The Ten Commandments and Judah Ben-Hur in 1959's Ben-Hur.
Heston, who was known in later life for his political activism and stance against gun control, was described by President George Bush as a "man of character and integrity, with a big heart".
Former first lady Nancy Reagan said she was "heartbroken" over his passing, while True Lies co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger praised him for entertaining "millions of people around the world during his legendary film career".
He added: "He cared deeply about his craft and he loved his family, his work and his country with all his heart."
Filmmaker Michael Moore, who condemned Heston for his role as president of the National Rifle Association in his 2002 documentary Bowling For Columbine, posted a large photograph of the actor on his website.
Heston passed away at his home in Beverly Hills with Lydia, his wife of 64 years, by his side.
