The actor said he had not been aware of his impending nuptials until a friend sent him a congratulatory text message.
The couple were rumoured to be tying the knot when a restaurant worker in Laglio, the Italian town where Clooney owns a villa, said they were engaged.
But the Ocean's 13 star later spoke out to dismiss the speculation, saying there was "no truth" in the story.
He is quoted as saying: "My BlackBerry woke me up the other day. It was buzzing away and when I looked at the message it said I was getting married. I thought, 'Wow! Somebody should tell Sarah!'"
