Bruce Springsteen has claimed that Barack Obama is the candidate best equipped to be the next American President.

The veteran rocker voiced his support for the Democrat candidate, who he claimed had the same aspirations for America as himself.

Writing on his official website, Springsteen said: "He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years.

"After the terrible damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken.

"I believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate to lead that project and to lead us into the 21st Century with a renewed sense of moral purpose and of ourselves as Americans.

"Over here on E Street, we're proud to support Obama for President."

Springsteen's hit single 'Born In The USA' was used by former Republican president Ronald Reagan during his 1984 election campaign, despite the fact the song actually criticised the Vietnam War.

He also took a leading role in the 2004 Vote For Change music tour that failed in its attempts to prevent the re-election of George W Bush.
