Shia LaBeouf has revealed that he was forced to pay his own dad to look after him when he started his career.

The actor, who stars in the upcoming Indiana Jones movie, said he was required to be supervised by an adult while filming a Disney TV show at the age of 13.

He told the Daily Mail: "Before I landed the role in Even Stevens, I barely knew my dad, but because I was a minor I needed to have an adult on set.

"Dad had just been released from veterans' hospital, where he'd gone through drugs withdrawal. So I paid him £400 a week to be with me. For him it wasn't about being with a son that he loved. He was rent-a-dad."

The 21-year-old added that the pair had become close during the three years they spent living in a motel, saying: "In a very real sense this business gave me my father back and I'll always be grateful for that."
