Red carpet tonight, ITVs delight

Well, that was certainly an experience. My very first red carpet. It's almost like managing to get your shoelaces to do up that very first time. Almost. It is immensely satisfying managing to grab the attention of a celebrity being forced to look everywhere at once and hold it for more than a few seconds.

Representatives of ITV Wales and BBC Wales, as well as many, many photographers, vied into the evening for quotes and pictures from the celebrities, who were on their way to a gala dinner and auction held inside the rather resplendently up-market Celtic Manor hotel.

Yours truly managed to grab a quick word with a few of the celebs, including previous Player Of The Tournament Chris Evans, sporting a jacket signed all over by various team members and a dapper Ian Wright, who thinks there may be a few dark horses amongst the Americans that we should watch out for.

I bypassed the rather scary and over-the-top Meatloaf in favour of a quick word with commentator Ronnie Corbett. The diminutive comedian says the US team should watch out for Jodie Kidd's swing in coming days, though he was quick to reassure all present that he would be "totally unbiased" in his commentary.

Alice Cooper, meanwhile, exclusively told Digital Spy: "I haven't seen a lot of [the European team's] games, but I've seen a few...pretty good swings out there. [I have] a five handicap, [but] if [I have] to give up ten strokes, that's an easy beat. I have to play my best game - they only have to play an average game to beat me. It'll depend on how good [me] and [my] partner are tomorrow."

Finally, Europe team captain and long-time professional golfer Colin Montgomerie agreed with many of the others that Cooper looked likely to do the best in the tournament, noting that he was "the best player...being up against him will be a difficult game." However, he thinks "it's an honour" to have the team he does, adding that Europe "has a great team and great spirits building".

Stay with Digital Spy for all the latest from the tournament.
