Showbiz Interview

Perez Hilton on Tom and Katie, Adele, One Direction, Cheryl Cole, more

By and Charlotte Grant-West
Celebrity blogger-turned-celebrity Perez Hilton has flown across the Atlantic to put the finishing touches to his 'One Night in London' concert this week, a star-studded event aimed at raising money for music charity The Brit Trust and The Brit School.

Digital Spy caught up with the famed gossiper before he returned to the good ole US-of-A and demanded his thoughts on today's hottest showbiz topics, including Tom and Katie, Adele, Cheryl Cole and One Direction.

On 'One Night in London':
"I love coming to London. I love music and I love that this fun evening is also a great opportunity to raise money and awareness for a very worthwhile cause, so it's a win all around."

On The Brit Trust, which will receive 100% of the ticket sales from 'One Night in London':
"I love music so much and it makes sense to have these music events aligned with causes that help young musicians. In America I've had a few [shows] this year where the money goes to VH1 'Save the Music' foundation and I raised over a $100,000 (£64,000) for them, which is pretty cool.

"My charity of choice for the London event is the Brit Trust and they are responsible for the Brit School, which has such a prestigious group of alumni including Adele, Amy Winehouse, Jessie J, and Leona Lewis, all of whom I've been a fan of. So I definitely am exited to be able to help them and their work.

"[The Brit School] is the go-to in the UK if you want to have a career in music. You can definitely do it on your own, but it's a whole different experience if during your formative years you have training and opportunity to experiment, fail, make your mistakes, learn. It's almost like going to a very prestigious university, all of the alumni look after each other. So it's like, 'You went to the Brit School? I went to the Brit School, let me see what I can do for you'."

On 'One Night in London' performer Cher Lloyd:
"I am a big fan [of Cher], period. But I've also been supporting her from her first moment on The X Factor. I just thought there was something very special about her. She felt different from everybody else and I love her music.

"It's one thing to appreciate a person on a talent show, but she has really established herself as a credible artist. It's also really exciting to see the response she's getting in America. She's resonating there and building an amazing fanbase."

On whether Cher can be as big as fellow X Factor stars One Direction:
"No, but only because that kind of fandom is more often than not exclusive to pretty boys and the girls that love them, like Justin Bieber. So young girls aren't going to respond in the same way as they are five really cute young boys.

"I think that she can have a different kind of success. I think she's got more staying power. I would not be surprised if One Direction broke up in the next couple of years.

"I think ultimately one of them will quit or get fired. They'll continue on as a foursome and then not too long after, maybe a year or two after, they'll just break up. Not right now, not at least until 2013. Things can change really quickly. I mean it happened really quickly for them and it could end very quickly for them too. Look at the Jonas Brothers, a few years ago they were really popular. Now, not so much."

On the divorce of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes:
"I didn't see it coming, but I also wasn't surprised. I totally understand it. Being with Tom Cruise is not easy, for a variety of reasons. First he's incredibly successful; he's one of the most famous people on the planet. Also [he's] a Scientologist, which is a religion that has been very controlling and definitely not very accepting of gay people, and Tom himself is very controlling.

"I think Katie probably liked that at the beginning. She definitely played the subservient role, but you can only do that for so long. Then you just need to stand up for yourself and I think that's what she's doing.

"After her split with Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman went on to be probably much more successful and I think it will be exactly the same for Katie Holmes. She's definitely not hiding in the shadows, she's been very out and about. She looks happy."

On Adele's pregnancy:
"I think whenever you become pregnant is the right time. You make it the right time, even if it's not the right time. People have so much good will for her because she poured her heart out to us in her songs. The world is so happy that she's happy."

On Simon Cowell:
"I love Simon Cowell. I think he's a very smart man, but I don't know if he's lost his edge. Watching [The X Factor USA] last season, there were too many times where he didn't say the truth. You don't have to be negative or mean or nasty about it and say, 'That was awful, it made me want to vomit', but it's still important to not say the opposite either.

"That is what made Simon successful in the first place. He was saying what everybody was thinking. Simon and I are similar in that way. I say what everybody is thinking and in the past I would do it in a bitchier way. Now I'm trying to be more positive. You can still be critical and do it in a positive way.

"What's tricky with Simon is that he's simultaneously in his mind trying to say what he thinks will be good for the ratings, but I think ultimately what's good for ratings is just being honest and having a good time."

On Nicole Scherzinger joining The X Factor UK:
"I think she did a great job in America. I thought she was sassy and opinionated and insightful. She got her start on a show like that, she can really sing."

On Cheryl Cole and her upcoming autobiography:
"People really care about what she has to say. She hasn't done that many interviews about her personal life. I think she doesn't need to do it now. If anything she should have done it before her new album came out, it would have been good promotion for that. But she must have got a good pay cheque."

On starring in Glee:
"That is a case where my shameless campaigning worked. I was very vocal about my desire to be on Glee and it happened. You got to put it out there.

"I would love to do a TV show here in London because I love it here. Ideally I would love to do something with music related, but I'm open to other things. I'll even do acting. I'm open.

"[What] I've been working on this year is to be open in every sense of the word. To be open to people, to be open to new experiences, to be open to possibilities, to be open and vulnerable, and to be open, honest and real."

On Frank Ocean's admission of his sexulity:
"I think it's awesome, especially in the hip-hop world where there is a lot of homophobia. It was a very powerful thing to do. I applaud him [and] I applaud Anderson Cooper. Visibility is so important to help achieve equality. Every little bit helps.

"I understand why people don't [come out]. They're afraid. But when you look at it I can't think of a single situation where somebody in the last five to ten years has come out and it's hurt their career. It's become a positive in many ways.

"I'm just waiting for the big leading man to come out. With women it's different - look at Amber Heard. She was vocally bisexual and no big deal, who cares? It's just with guys there's a little difference. We need that big Zac Efron-like person. I'm not saying he's gay, I don't think he is - I wish. But we need somebody like that who's a heartthrob, a leading man, to come out and still be successful."

Perez Hilton's 'One Night in London' takes place at Electric Brixton this Friday (July 13). Tickets can be purchased through SeeTickets.com
