Shappi Khorsandi: 'I wouldn't want Kate Middleton's life' - video

By and Tom Mansell
Shappi Khorsandi has said that she sympathises with Kate Middleton and Leona Lewis over the scrutiny placed upon their relationships.

The stand-up comedian explained that she realised while working on her upcoming show Dirty Looks and Hopscotch, in which she asks why she allowed herself to be "sucked in" to a romance with a sociopathic rock star, that she doesn't want "a modern day Prince Charming".

She told Digital Spy: "Us little girls are filled with this idea of wanting to be a princess and living out a fairytale, which is why you get these ridiculous weddings with these huge frocks.

"Us women are sort of encouraged that you can be a princess. I mean, would you want Kate Middleton's life? I wouldn't want to be a princess, but it's taken me years to figure that out."

Khorsandi also slammed the branding of Lewis as a "cougar" during her alleged fling with 19-year-old One Direction singer Liam Payne, arguing that such terms imply that older women have "snatched someone who didn't know better".

"[They're] words that we use to use a woman's age to demean her. Cougar, I've got a bit of an issue with, because I just happen to be dating someone who is 15 years younger than me.

"The word cougar has been only said [to me] once and that person never said it again. They were dealt with."

The 39-year-old added: "It just implies that you're predatory and, frankly, I was way more predatory at 20 than I am now. I was a cougar at 20, now I'm a bit like a tortoise."

Khorsandi will begin a 15-night residency at London's Soho Theatre with Dirty Looks and Hopscotch on Tuesday (October 16).

The show will then tour venues in Bury St Edmunds, Windsor, the Isle of Wight, Bristol, Kettering, Folkstone and Great Yarmouth between November 12 and December 8.
