Canadian police appear to have saved ex-Van Halen frontman Dave Lee Roth from a possible car crash brought on by a nut allergy.

Roth was pulled over for speeding in a small town in Ontario when it transpired that he was not able to drive properly because he was suffering from an allergic reaction.

Local press reports said officers, who waited with him until paramedics arrived, had "saved his life".

Constable Chris Thompson, one of the police present, said neither he nor his colleagues were aware that they were treating a veteran rock star at the time.

However, Thompson added: "The guy stuck out like a sore thumb. He was wearing a little silk scarf and flashy clothing - it's not something you see in Oakland too often."

Roth began a comeback tour with Van Halen ealier this year, but it was cancelled midway through.
