The mother of Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia has accused MP Lembit Opik of being "insensitive".

Gabriela recently ended her relationship with the Lib Dem politician and is now refusing to speak to him. They had been dating since October 2006.

Margit Irimia, who manages the career of her two daughters, admitted that she was offended when Lembit proposed to Gabriela just two weeks after the star's grandmother had passed away. She also accused Lembit of snubbing the Romanian pop singer's family members.

"I explained to him that 99 per cent of Romania is Orthodox, and getting engaged when a grandmother has died is not allowed. He had no idea," Margit told the Daily Mail.

"Gabriela was happy Lembit had proposed, and she accepted him, but she was very worried it was premature and that she would be criticised in Romania, where she and Monica are much bigger stars than they are here. They are huge in Romania.

"It was very insensitive. In our country, both families are involved before the proposal. I've never even met Lembit's family. He should have asked Gabriela's father before proposing to her. When he comes to visit us, he only comes to see Gabriela, not the rest of the family. He never talks to me."

Margit recently claimed that Opik is plagued by "insecurities".
