Gok Wan has revealed that he asks job applicants to clean his apartment when they visit him for interviews.
The fashion consultant, who hosts Channel 4's How To Look Good Naked, claimed that the request helps him to judge a person's approach to design.
"It's a really good way of finding out about that person's sense of style as well as picking up on other skills they might have," Gok told Take It Easy magazine.
"You can teach people to sew, set up a fashion shoot, send emails, deal with the media, but what you can't teach is a sense of style. You've either got it or you haven't, it's as simple as that."
Wan also admitted that he lacked direction in his life as a teenager, but eventually realised that he has an eye for fashion.
"I dropped out of my drama course at university after a year and just floated from rubbish job to rubbish job, with no self-esteem and no idea what I wanted to do," he explained. "I thought I wanted to get into hair and make-up, which I did for a short time, and then I fell in with a stylist by chance and very soon fell in love with everything about the fashion industry."
