The actress made the admission in the latest issue of Glamour magazine, but noted that she had become "more comfortable" with her figure since working with a personal trainer.
She said: "Now I work out once a week with this woman, who's great - I need a drill sergeant standing next to me to make me do things."
Knightley added that her hectic work schedule may have contributed to her "scrawny" appearance.
"Until this year, I've worked pretty constantly and I think you get to the point where you just need to stop for a minute," she commented. "I hadn't worked out for about a year. A friend bought me a few sessions with a personal trainer for Christmas, so I've stuck to it."
Knightley's mother, The Edge Of Love screenwriter Sharman Macdonald, recently hit out at press reports claiming that her daughter suffered from anorexia.
