Chapman is scheduled to appear in front of a parole board this week, where the case for his release will be presented.
Ono told the New York Daily News that Chapman could endanger the lives of others and himself if he is granted parole.
She said: "It's dangerous for him to come out. Not only for us, but for himself. There are so many people out there who dislike him. It's safer for him to stay in jail."
Chapman shot Lennon dead outside his New York home in December 1980. He is currently serving 20 years to life at the Attica Correctional Facility.
