Isaac Hayes 'died from stroke'

Soul icon Isaac Hayes died from a stroke, US authorities have revealed.

The singer was found unconscious in his home on Sunday and was pronounced dead just after 7pm that evening.

According to the Memphis Sheriff's Department, a post-mortem is still to be carried out, though doctors listed the cause of death as "stroke" on Hayes's death certificate.

He previously suffered a stroke in 2006.

A memorial service for the 'Soul Man' singer will be held next Monday at the Hope Presbyterian Church in Cordova, Tennessee.

Hayes's family yesterday released a statement saying: "While he was an iconic figure to many, to us he was husband, father and friend. We will ever miss his love, wisdom, humour and the familiar comfort of his voice."
