The ex-Eurythmics singer was forced to return home early from an AIDS conference in Central America to have the procedure at a London hospital.
Lennox experienced back spasms in Mexico and emerged from her flight home in a wheelchair.
"I came back to the UK and got wheeled off the plane... Felt a bit like Elizabeth Taylor," she wrote on her website. "Got an MRI scan this morning, and am now sitting up in bed with my left foot like a dead fish."
A spokesman for Lennox's record label SonyBMG said: "Following an injury received while attending last week's international AIDS conference in Mexico, Annie Lennox underwent spinal surgery to release an impinged nerve.
"The surgery went as planned, and Annie is now recuperating at home. Annie would like to send her thanks and appreciation to all who have sent their well wishes in the past few days."
As a result of her back problems, Lennox's new album, a retrospective look at her solo career, has been pushed back to next year.
