Speaking on a New Zealand breakfast radio show, McFadden said: "If you are not gay, a man should not be wearing pink."
He added: "Saying pink is a form of red is the same as saying.... homosexual is a form of male."
When a listener told McFadden that in the olden days boys used to traditionally wear pink, he sneered: "In San Francisco or Sydney?"
A spokesperson for Auckland's Rainbow Youth charity commented: "It's the sort of stuff that gets said every day in the schoolyard.
"A lot of young people are quite impressionable, and when they see celebrities saying stuff like that, they think it's okay to say it themselves."
