Courtney Love has spoken out in support of Russell Brand's controversial performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The singer follows in the footsteps of Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher, who has also defended Brand in the aftermath of the show.

The comedian's routine included jokes about US president George W. Bush and singing trio The Jonas Brothers.

Love remarked on her MySpace page that he was right to mock the moral beliefs of the teen band, writing: "I love Russell. Viva you motherf***er. I love you an (sic) damn proud of you baby!"

Love was recently accused of being responsible for the demise of ex-husband Kurt Cobain's band Nirvana.
