Model Kate Moss feared a car thief had run off with a £200,000 diamond ring, but the raider left with just £10 and a box of Quality Street chocolates.

Moss couldn't remember if the solitaire gem was in the 4x4 parked outside her North London home.

A friend of the model told The Mirror: "Kate was absolutely distraught when she saw broken glass on the driveway and realised that her car had been broken into.

"She wasn't sure what she'd left on the backseat and initially feared they'd got away with a £200,000 diamond solitaire ring. Then she had a closer look and was thrilled to find just how little was missing.

"The police were called and they took the break-in extremely seriously. They recommended ways for her to step up security and ensure it never happens again."

Meanwhile, Moss has admitted that she loves the smell of petrol and that her five-year-old daughter Lila enjoys the whiff too. She spoke as she launched her new fragrance Velvet Hour, which she says is the "kind of musky smell that men like".

In an interview with Company magazine, Kate revealed that Lila hates her going away for work. "I really miss Lila when I’m away. I love her more than anything in the world," she added.
