The Duchess star named Richard Yates's 1950s-set Revolutionary Road and Bernhard Schlink's Holocaust novel The Reader as her two top reads in an interview with USA Today: "[They are] two really depressing books but really good. Not exactly a barrel of laughs."
The actress also revealed that she was a fan of renowned war correspondent Martha Gellhorn and Gitta Sereny's Into That Darkness: From Mercy Killing To Mass Murder, an account of the World War II death camp Treblinka.
"Not exactly happy, but interesting," she said. "Really great writing creates such amazing images. It's a compilation of investigative journalism."
