Ryan O'Neal's lawyer has denied the drug allegations levelled at his client.
The 67-year-old actor and his son Redmond were arrested on Wednesday following a police raid on their Malibu home that uncovered the psychostimulant methamphetamine.
Both men were booked on suspicion of possession and released on $10,000 bail.
O'Neal's lawyer Mark Werksman told The Associated Press: "The drugs found were not his. He would never use them."
Werksman added that "when all the facts come out, he should not be charged with any crime here".
O'Neal's son Redmond, 23, had pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and possession of heroin and methamphetamine in June.
"He's tried to lead a peaceful life," Werksman said of his client. "He's acting and he's caring for his family and this is the last thing he ever wanted or expected."
