Theatres on Broadway dimmed their lights at curtain time tonight to pay tribute to Hollywood legend Paul Newman.

Newman died last week aged 83 after a battle with cancer.

The Broadway League, which is the trade group for theatres, arranged for lights to be dimmed for one minute at 8pm.

A spokesman said in a statement: "The Broadway community mourns the loss of Paul Newman, the universally admired actor, director and philanthropist."

Newman made his Broadway debut in 1953 in William Inge's Picnic, in which he met future wife Joanne Woodward.

Earlier this week, his five daughters described their father as an "inspiration".
