Actor Brad Pitt and director Steven Spielberg have so far donated $100,000 (£54,000) to the anti-Proposition 8 campaign, which opposes a state vote in November to ban the practice.
However, activist Jonathan Lewis commented that Hollywood needs to get more involved in the issue.
"We are concerned that the entertainment industry hasn't stepped up to the plate to fight this unnecessary initiative... Now it's time for the entertainment industry as a whole to take the lead," he said.
Gay marriage was legalised in the state in May, with Star Trek actor George Takei and partner Brad Altman being the first couple to register to marry.
