Liz Hurley's famous "safety pin" dress has been voted the most iconic garment in a new poll.

The black Versace outfit, showcased by Hurley at the 1994 premiere of Four Weddings And A Funeral, beat the Givenchy gown worn by Audrey Hepburn at the 1954 Oscars into second place.

The Debenhams survey asked 3,000 women to rate the best celebrity dresses of all time.

Other stars to make the top 20 included Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet, Halle Berry, Bjork and Kate Moss.

"Liz Hurley's daring 'safety pin' dress is one of the most famous black dresses worn on the red carpet, which made her a household name overnight," a Debenhams spokesman told the Daily Telegraph.

"At the time she was another unknown actress, more famous for being Hugh Grant's girlfriend, but by wearing 'that dress' she soon had worldwide fame."
