Gomez named UNICEF spokesperson

Teen actress Selena Gomez is to head a campaign for children's charity UNICEF.

The Wizards Of Waverly Place star has been named as the spokesperson for its 2008 Trick-or-Treat initiative.

Gomez, 16, will work to encourage children to help those in need around the world.

She said: "I want to help encourage other kids to make a difference in the world and show them that Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF is such a great, fun way to get involved."

Charity president Carly Stern said its members are thrilled to have Gomez on board.

"Young people can relate to Selena and she is a great role model who we believe will greatly enhance the visibility of the programme," she said.

Gomez was recently rumoured to be dating Nick Jonas of pop trio the Jonas Brothers.
