The 38-year-old TV presenter suffered a serious brain injury when he was involved in a high-speed dragster crash while filming the BBC show in September 2006.
When asked if he felt nervous when stepping behind the wheel, Hammond replied: "I do sometimes. If I'm driving a very fast car or attempting a tricky manoeuvre I do sometimes sit quietly behind the steering wheel for a moment and think. I'd be an idiot if I didn't.
"I have learned very graphically and the hardest way that things can and do go wrong."
The new series of Top Gear begins on BBC Two next month.
