U2 frontman Bono will write between six to ten columns for the New York Times next year.

The newspaper's editor Andrew Rosenthal announced the news to students at Columbia's School Of Journalism earlier this week.

Bono will not be paid for his work with the publication, which is expected to cover his charitable work in Africa.

"We have asked Bono to write an occasional column for the paper next year, covering a range of subjects," said a spokesperson.

Chris Martin, Ray Davies and Bob Geldof have all written for the newspaper in the past.

Rozenthal is reportedly also interested in recruiting Queen guitarist Brian May to work as a writer.
