The Tomb Raider actress has revealed that she had problems with her identity during her teens and 20s, adding that she only truly found herself when she started to think about others.
"I used to think I was unstable, because I had this thirst for something," she told the New York Daily News.
"I could never figure out what it was. I couldn't sleep at night, and I always wanted to be somewhere else ... Wherever I was, I wanted to be somewhere else. And I always saw myself - wherever I was in life - staring out the window."
She added: "I knew little about the world, and I was completely self-absorbed. It was only when I came out of my shell and started taking care of others that I found the real Angelina."
The 33-year-old said she now finds her life "chaotic" and "adventurous", and added that she feels "braver" than she was in her angry younger years.
