The survey, carried out by Parade and Entertainment Tonight, saw Tom Hanks taking second place, followed by Reese Witherspoon.
Smith, 40, said: "I think a large part of why I've been successful is that I have, essentially, a white-collar career with a blue-collar mentality. I can never really relax. I'm always waiting to see what's next. It's always, 'OK, something different is gonna happen here'."
Runner-up Hanks claimed that he never thinks of acting as work, saying: "I shouldn't be called the nicest guy in Hollywood. I should be called the luckiest guy, because I still can't believe it."
George Clooney was fourth in the list, followed by Meryl Streep in fifth and Brad Pitt in sixth. Julia Roberts, Johnny Depp, Jennifer Aniston and Patrick Dempsey completed the top ten.
