Anne Hathaway's ex Raffaello Follieri has reportedly complained that conditions behind bars are making him ill.

Follieri was jailed for four and a half years last month after being found guilty of fraud. Rats, excrement in the shower and an odious smell are among his complaints, reports the New York Daily News.

Follieri's objections concerning the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Centre were listed in a letter that his lawyer Flora Edwards sent to a Manhattan federal judge. "He says the stench is intolerable," Edwards wrote. "Clearly no-one should be subjected to these conditions."

Edwards asked Judge John Koeltl to return her client to Manhattan's Metropolitan Correctional Centre, adding that his medication has been confiscated and he has been short of breath.

The lawyer said the showers and toilets were "unspeakably unsanitary" and that Follieri had been unable to eat.

Judge Koeltl reportedly asked prosecutors to report back as soon as possible on Follieri's medical care.
