Aguilera: Gay marriage ban "unfair"

Christina Aguilera has spoken out in support of gay marriage, saying legislation to stop it is "unfair".

The singer insisted that same-sex couples should be given the freedom to wed.

"They're constantly pushing to be heard and given equal rights. I think there's a lot of unfairness that goes along with being gay, so the more I can give them a voice, then I'll do so," she told the Daily Record.

"But I also think we'd be fooling ourselves if we thought that everywhere was accepting of gay rights and gay marriage.

"I think that it's unfair there has to be some kind of standard for marriage. Marriage should be about celebrating two people's love for each other. It shouldn't have anything to do with someone's sexual preference."

Legislation was recently passed in California banning same-sex couples from getting married. Proposition 8 restricts the definition of 'marriage' to a union between a man and a woman.

"Europe is a lot more open when it comes to sexuality. I think that with the history of European culture, there is a lot more openness to being provocative," Aguilera added.
