John Brolin has confessed that he was surprised to see an amendment made to outlaw gay marriage in California.

The W. actor said it is "awful" that the change, known as Proposition 8, has been passed in the state.

"[It] doesn't mean [gay people] are going to stop kissing in the streets, just 'cos they can't get married," he told Access Hollywood.

"Gay life is more mainstream, but at the same time, things like this happen and you go: 'You got to be kidding me!' Especially in California. I think it's awful, but I understand it, everybody has their perspective."

Brolin also revealed that he does not see his own marriage to actress Diane Lane translating to a successful on-screen pairing.

"We could never do it. We couldn't look at each other in the eye and act. It would be impossible. It would be non-stop laughing. It would be ridiculous," he said.
