Charlize Theron has been awarded the position of Messenger of Peace by the United Nations (UN).

The actress, who joins George Clooney and Michael Douglas in becoming an ambassador for the group, will visit countries with poor women's rights records and promote efforts to end violence.

"[Theron] has been recognised for her work focusing attention and mobilising efforts on social issues, particularly in her native South Africa, where she has the Africa Outreach Project, which provides funding for a mobile health and computer clinic that visits high schools in rural communities affected by HIV/Aids," said a UN spokesperson.

In addition to Theron, there are nine other serving Messengers of Peace promoting issues such as intercultural dialogue, the environment and youth.
