Cruise: 'I prefer risky movie roles'

Tom Cruise has revealed that choosing risky film roles has led to his continuing success.

The actor has avoided being typecast in 'safe' roles, despite some of his previous films being slated by critics.

"There's always someone telling you not to make a movie. When I did Born On The Fourth Of July they said, 'This is going to ruin your career. What are you doing?" he told Details magazine.

"Suicide? I've committed it. There were people who didn't want me to make Top Gun."

Cruise recently finished work on his latest movie Valkyrie, which sees him play Claus von Stauffenberg, an assassin who tried to kill Adolf Hitler during the Second World War.

The star recently revealed that bad press helped bring him and wife Katie Holmes closer together.
