Tennant up for two theatre awards

The production of Hamlet starring David Tennant has been nominated for two major theatre awards, it has been announced.

The Royal Shakespeare Company's sell-out show is up for The Theatre Event Of The Year gong in the 2009 Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers' Choice Awards.

The play, which earlier ran in Stratford-Upon-Avon, is also nominated for the Best Regional Production title.

The Donmar Warehouse is leading the way with 18 nominations for its productions this year, while the National Theatre takes second spot on the table with 14. Kenneth Branagh (Ivanov), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Othello) and Eddie Redmayne (Now Or Later) will battle with Kevin Spacey and Jeff Goldblum (both Speed The Plow) for Best Actor.

Graham Norton, Mel Giedroyc and Michael Ball helped to announce the nominations at today's ceremony at the London Hippodrome, while Lesley Garrett performed the song 'You'll Never Walk Alone' from Carousel to guests including Kelly Brook, Suzanne Shaw, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and Steven Berkoff.

Winners in all 25 of the award categories, which are chosen by members of the public, will be announced in February.
