David Tennant pulled out of last night's performance of Hamlet due to a back injury, the BBC reports.

The Doctor Who actor stars opposite Patrick Stewart in the Royal Shakespeare Company production, which just moved from Stratford upon Avon to London's Novello Theatre.

"We're waiting to hear whether he'll be able to perform tonight on press night," said a spokeswoman for the RSC.

Tennant's understudy, Edward Bennett, reportedly received a standing ovation from the audience last night.

Ticket's for Hamlet sold out within three hours of becoming available in September.
