Madonna has been described as "shameless" by a retired Roman Catholic cardinal.

The singer was criticised by the religious figure ahead of two shows in Chile.

Speaking during a mass for late dictator Augusto Pinochet, Jorge Medina said that the popstar encourages "impure thoughts".

"This woman comes here and in an incredibly shameless manner, she provokes a crazy enthusiasm, an enthusiasm of lust, lustful thoughts, impure thoughts," The AP quotes him as saying.

Madonna will perform to 120,000 fans over two nights in Chilean capital Santiago as part of her 'Sticky & Sweet' world tour.
