Nigella sparks anger with bear comments

Nigella Lawson has angered animal rights groups by saying that she would kill a bear.

Appearing on BBC's The One Show yesterday, the TV chef admitted that she would only wear fur if she could kill the animal and skin it herself.

She said: "I feel going into a shop and buying a fur coat would be an act of weakness. But if I could go out into the woods and kill a bear myself, I would then wear it proudly as a trophy."

When host Adrian Chiles pressed Lawson on her remarks, she replied: "If you're in nature and it's either you or the bear goes..."

A spokesman for Respect For Animals said that Lawson's comments left "blood on her hands".

"If she could see the way in which bears and other wild animals are killed in the wild she wouldn't have been so flippant and glib," the representative said. "In my view, Nigella has blood on her hands."

A spokesperson for PETA told DS: "It is highly unlikely that one will ever find oneself in a life-or-death battle with a bear. As Nigella is happy to wear dead cats and dogs, perhaps she will use them in recipes for her next cookbook."
